View Full Version : Version 3.0 Discussion

This thread is for discussing features that didn't make it into Version 2.0, but you'd like to see in version 3.0, or possibly a 2.x release. We're going to shoot for an August release.
COPY/PASTE from Wickedfire (http://www.wickedfire.com/design-development-programming/55429-wf-review-holy-grail.html):
Ok so just another question about implementation. Lets say I have a site that has a few x,xxx professionals that are to be reviewed. This list I will be updating monthly. How do you easily update the information without clearing out all the legitimate reviews on the site? I see in your video that you can easily remove an update, but what if you just want to "update an update?"
We've had enough requests for this that we'll implement this feature in a version 2.x release. 2.0 is coming very very soon, but this sort of feature requires wicked deep testing so it'll be a few weeks before we can consider a 2.x release, but it will be there in 2.x.
I can tell you now that you'll need some consistent identifier in your source data to make this possible.
Example: First time import, If a law firm goes by BB_Wolfe Law Firm and by the time you want to update, they go by BB_Wolfe and Associates, you will need a unique identifier in your source data that matches the previous/current/future records.. Something like CustomerID, or BusinessID, or TelephoneNum, or WebsiteURL, etc. Some record that will remain relatively consistent through time and we can use to base our add/update/delete/duplicate import process on.
I think the ability to Add/update/delete/duplicate is about all we'll need unless someone can come up with something better.

First of all let me say this is a kick ass plugin.
Just started playing with the plugin recently and for my first usage the above feature is exactly what I will be in need of. Great to hear it's coming soon.
As a bonus, how about being able to specify a url to where the csv file is and it can then check if there are changes - if not ignore and if there are then auto update. Of course this isn't always optimal but if you have a fairly small csv and have a script to auto update via a scraper or data feed this would be a very useful feature. Even better if you can make it work with larger csvs but that's probably asking for too much :)

And another one - there may already be a way to do this so excuse my noobines with the plugin.
It would be good if there was a way to organize the information in different ways.
For example, let's say you did a review site on books.
You've got author, genre, price
On your site you could have a browse by author, genre, or price and it would re-arrange the information and sidebar categories in that way. Within the plugin there would be an option for 2 or more templates to use depending on how the user chooses to organize the info. Only thing about this is it would have to somehow be made SEO friendly.

How about the ability to write a sentence like this
The {fat|stupid|pretty} {fox|deer|mother} {rode on|ate|made love to} a duck.
You get the idea.. ala Jet Spinner if you will. Also be able to import the database variables.. being able to import the databases is great but it leaves a pattern. If you can custom spin the content in a controlled manner... as well and import the CSV fields you are opened up to a whole new ball game of unique content minus the footprints... I would love to see this in a 2.x release
People sometimes refer this as madlibs and they also refer to the database variable import (what the plugin does now) as madlibs.. Yes you could just add a column of nouns and verbs or whatever you needed to your content database but that becomes cumbersome and overkill very fast and not as easy to randomize. You can get really creative with this and double bracket statements and have multiple sentence choices with multiple entries inside of it as well.
I love that idea and also think it could be applied to the comment generator to provide some actual comments in addition to the star ratings.

Please add a feature to limit the number of affiliate links per page/posting to x. As an example have the option to have not more than 3 affiliate links on a page.

It would be very helpful to have a comparison table creator like WPReviewEngine.
And a way to add editor rating's.

Any thoughts on the google announcement about including reviews as snippets? Could this be setup as an option to have on or off based on a switch in the plugin for version 3?

Yes please!
Also a comparison table would be neat, but to be honest not really a requirement. I would prefer more tools which help you scale faster.
Currently the script is reasonably fast at important csv files, but on a shared server it does struggle, if there is any way to make this use less memory that would really help since I often have to break up large databases in to lots of chunks.
Content spinning tools would be fantastic though, especially if you spin content from fields stored in the csv file that your upload. Spinning the comments would also be pretty cool.
I'm pleased Nick is back on the project after running away with our money so hopefully he make it up to us by working with you Ryan to build a kickass new version.

Hey now, I didn't run with anyone's money! Your wife, yea, I did run away with her but that's another story!
The problem I have with content spinning tools is the whole duplicate content thing, along with the extraordinarily difficult task of making the content not look spammy. I'm not sure that's something we can even remotely conquer to be honest. If you guys need some good cheap labor (like $300/month for full time) let me know!
We will be adding some themes to v.3. Let me see what we can do with some comparison table code that you can place in your existing templates!

Please add the option to encrypt affiliate links!
Editor reviews, would be nice to have as somebody posted as well as the table comps

Yeah I see what you mean about content spinning fair enough.
However what you could do instead is something similar to the google maps import. Basically just with google images. Something similar to this:
http://dearcomputer.nl/gir/
So what would happen is you would select a field from your csv import to be your image field and then it would search google images for a picture of that and then add the image to the post, alternatively it could work with flickr if you want to be all goody-goody about copyright. I guess it would be made with CURL.

This is WFReview, we aren't goody-goody about shit! lol
I get what you're saying and it's totally possible. Let's get 3.0 done first then we'll explore the possibility of working with a few of you to get a kick ass comment spinner!
How about a more robust importing system so we can fill in the excerpt and custom meta fields.
Also, a more realistic name list would be cool. One where Quintessa, Kameko, Safira and Lysandra don't have the exact same chance of appearing as Mary, Jennifer and Lisa.
I have the US male and female name frequencies from each decade (40s - 90s) in excel. I use them to make my own weighted name lists with php. I rather have this feature built right into the plugin, though.
Something where, if I was selling/rating retirement homes, I could use 80% of names from the 1940s and 20% from the 50s.
But if I was rating skateboard parks, I could use 80% of the names from the 90s and 20% from the 80s so I could get comments from names like Jacob, Tyler and Ashley instead of Bertha, Mufutau and Fitzgerald. =)

There are two text files in the /wp-content/plugins/wfreview directory that you can edit to make the changes you want. You can technically erase all but those names you want to use!

With testing, we hope to release by October 1, hopefully much sooner!

How hard would it be add some simple logic in the importing feature.
The problem I just ran into is when I'm importing tags I import them in between
But if there are no tags, instead of outputing
I want it to say
no tags

I know I can make my own text files for the names, thats how I do it now. It would be much easier to click a couple checkboxes and enter %s than continually making new lists.
I would have done it myself it the plugin wasn't ioncubed. ;)
But if no one else cares about it but me, I keep making them like I'm making them. Still love the plugin.

How about if we add the following functionality to the import process...
On the template page, you can use:
IF([csv field exists])
{
output
}
So if a field in the csv is blank, none of the output will go in the post.
If the field value exists:
IF([email_Address])
{
Email: [email_address]
}
outputs: "Email: Nickmattern@gmail.com"
******************
If the field value DOES NOT exist:
IF([email_Address])
{
Email: [email_address]
}
Outputs nothing. No "email:" or anything.
Does that satisfy your request? You can still use [tags] in the {output} and they'll appear in the post as normal.
Yes that would surely solve my problem. :)
