View Full Version : Categories & Removing posts

Couple of things here:
1. Categories. I defined a field in my CSV as categories and uploaded my .csv
the posts got created, the categories got created, the posts did NOT get assigned to any categories. The categories exist in the admin area, but on the front end, there are no categories.
2. removing posts. the previous versions had a method to remove all posts from a given .csv - I don't see this option anymore. When working out my issue with the cron tabs (http://www.reviewpluginforwordpress.com/support/showthread.php?t=245), I uploaded my .csv a second time to try to get things working. When the cron issue got worked out (thanks Ryan), I had 2 copies of everything. I wanted to go in and remove a set, but it seems I can't do that in this version.

I had exactly the same problem with categories and posts, also lots of trouble with cron for some reason, using hostgator.
I manually put the cron url in the address bar and (the posts got imported with the categories error) there is was a list of errors regarding headers already being sent and conflicting with the "all-in-one-seo" plugin.
Hope the above helps track down the bug.

Have you installed 3.0.2 yet?
Deactivate 3.0.x, upload 3.0.2, then reactivate. Should all be fixed by this point.

ok, just installed 3.0.2 which fixed the ability to remove the posts.
the category issue is only semi fixed. the post itself says it's assigned to the appropriate category, and the admin area shows that they all have the right category assigned, but in the sidebar, it still shows that there are no categories.
edit: in admin area, looking at a post, it shows that it is assigned the category, but if you look at the categories in the admin, they all show 0 posts

Which theme are you using?
PM me the URL if possible. I haven't been able to recreate this issue.

Just got a fix from Ryan on this in case anyone else has this issue.
download version 3.0.3, deactivate your plugin, upload the new files, reactivate, then delete your old posts, and reimport your .csv
Thanks Ryan and Nick for all the quick fixes!

I've tried the solution here, but to no avail. My posts are all uncategorized, and have no tags. I have the latest version (3.0.3).

Check your CSV file and the category you're importing to, this bug is known fixed.
Were the category/tags in the data or did you define them. Please post a more descriptive explanation of your problem.

I am using the busybee theme from WooThemes.
I am currently trying to import Adobe software products, categorizing them into one category -Adobe, while using the 'keywords' column in the CSV file to generate Tags. However, they aren't showing up when the products are imported.
I'm also having an issue with the thumbnail images. I've set the settings to automatically generate thumbnails from the first image of the post, but they aren't showing up on the homepage either. However, the images show up on the product page just fine.
Here is the link to the site:

I've solved the thumbnail issue, but the category and tag issues are still there.

I'm looking at the site this AM and things look proper in categories and with thumbnails.
Without seeing your CSV, I cannot tell you what the potential problem is, only that it's 100% likley either 1) the way you're defining tags or 2) the CSV data/structure for that field is bad/wrong.

*sigh*
Ive got the same problem with 3.0.3. Its got all the cats in admin but none of the posts are in their cats. With the exception of 2 cats which magically worked. So 32k posts and about 1k of them have cats.
Also after I saw the problem with my template and cats I hit cancel on the import. It said it stopped but it did not.. the damn thing is still posting the broken posts until it finishes the csv. Since wfreview thinks I "canceled" the import it gives no option to delete all of the posts. So now I need to find a way to delete all 32k broken posts.
and you have the csv I am using in your email.

Did you deactivate 3.0.2 before you activated 3.0.3?
Download WP-Suicide to clear out your posts without affecting the rest of teh system

Yes, 3.0.2 was deactivated and then deleted. 3.0.3 was uploaded and activated. Items were imported, 99% were cat less.
Are you pulling categories from the data file or selecting one from the drop-down list? If it's from a data column, are subcategories present?

I am having the same problem as well. Categories showing up in admin, but not on my site. Also, out of about 25K records, only 700 got processed.
I am selecting categories from the CSV, some go 4-5 levels deep.

I should also mentioned that the above result was with the Import Function set to WP style after failed attempts with the custom WFreview method.

Had the same issue - here's how I got around it...
I deleted the posts that weren't showing in the categories. Then, I created the categories in WP Admin, and also created a field/column in my .CSV file with the exact same name (not the slug, the category name).
Designated that field/column as the category when I uploaded the posts... all posts showed up in the correct category when the import job was complete.
Hope this helps someone with the same headache...
But otherwise, this plugin is working like a charm - this is going to be a major time saver for me.

Yeah I just went through this nightmare. Pain in the ass. From what I can tell, the taxonomy - terms - etc - tables were all jacked up. WFreview was removing the posts but not cleaning up the other tables. Uncategorized had a ton of ghost posts and the other categories were reporting they had posts even though the posts did not exist.
The only thing that worked for me was using 'wp suicide' and completely starting over. This blows since the site was not new and I wasted way too much time rebuilding, posting, and redirecting dead links that were listed in the search engines.
Get wp suicide, it's a nice complement to this plugin and is much easier than digging through the db manually. Thanks Nick for mentioning it!

re: Ghost Posts left in default category: I thought it was user error on my part :) For smaller feeds I am using an empty install and then exporting to import into the actual site I want the posts on. However that won't work for larger feeds.
Also creating sub categories isn't working hardly at all. I used the > delimiter but the categories didn't get created correctly so am moving them by hand to the category I wanted them to be subbed under. What happened was the Main Category was "ghosted" and didn't show up on the site and the sub categories only showed if hierarchy wasn't checked.

Without seeing your CSV I can't tell you what the issue is, but i'm 99.999 sure it's your CSV. I have at least 50 sites with subcategories and never have experienced the issue you report.

I'm on a private VPS. The category and some of the subcategories were created, but the Top level category didn't show up in the category tree on the site and the "tree" didn't work. I am using a Shareasale Datafeed where the merchant had a custom field with category > subcategory. I'll go back and try the import again using a different delimiter. I set up several sites this weekend, hoping to add product feeds this week. (some rather large ones).
I work with training affiliates, so am hoping this works the way I anticipate it will and will share it with my mentees :) I haven't joined the affiliate program until I'm sure it works well with Shareasale feeds, and I'm *very* happy to see your tutorials that feature Shareasale merchants.

Nick, I just sent you the file, but it might have been "user error", I *might* have forgotten to check that extra box.... Just to make a liar out of me the file just imported perfectly :)
So - Happy New Year!!! Here's to making lots of cool new niche sites in 2010 :)
I thank Shawn Collins for sending me to your wickedfire post about your charity offer. I didn't take advantage of that because I make donations of time and $$$ to a variety of charities all year, but I went and explored that post anyway and found your cool plugin, videos and decided that not only do I like the plugin, but I like your attitude, and the videos are fun AND informative. Plus SAS is my favorite network and you happened to use them in a video demo.
Will be sending people your way in 2010 and beyond....

I have a similar problem using this plugin. I have a trial CSV file downloaded from Commission Junction that contains a column with categories and sub-categories separated by ">".
I tried to use this to import posts with sub-categories created automatically.
However, the plugin seems not being able to create three levels of sub-categories, i.e. main category==> level 1 sub categories ==> Level 2 sub categories. It is able to create the first two levels with the third level failed to be created under the 2nd level.
Actually it messed up my categories database as the 3rd level category created cannot be seen under the admin panel but it can be seen in the homepage. Now I have no way to delete this 3rd level category. What should I do?
Any hint? Should I send you the CSV file for verification?

This should all be fixed by version 3.1.5. If not, let me know.
